The Douro Valley with its famous terraces is a masterpiece of nature, but also the result of the effort and energy expended by man in its transformation.

The Douro Wine Region has some wonderful walking routes among the centuries-old terraces of the Douro farms overlooking the river, there is one that stands out for the beauty of the landscapes it crosses.

The Port Wine Trail is probably the most beautiful pedestrian trail in the Douro and along this route it runs along trails bordered by the famous vineyards of the demarcated area of the Alto Douro Wine Region, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001.

The Port Wine Trail is a beautiful walk between terraces and vineyards and discovers the most beautiful pedestrian route in the Douro and comes into close and privileged contact with the vineyards and its people.

The presence of the Douro River in the field of vision is a constant during the Port Wine walking trail where the views over the terraces and the Douro River are breathtaking whatever the season.

The walker must follow the Port Wine Trail on foot, crossing the wine-growing landscapes that make the Douro famous, walking among the vineyards cultivated on terraces that testify to the centuries-old communion between Man and Nature and were included on the UNESCO Heritage list in Portugal.

The Port Wine Trail begins in the churchyard of Samodães from where you have an incredible first panoramic view over the Douro valley.

From there, start descending through the village's cobbled alleys or rural paths, sometimes flanked by high walls, passing in front of some inhabited houses.

The walker realizes that he is descending until a few hundred meters ahead, the parallels give way to dirt and terraces with vineyards begin to cover the landscape with green.

Ahead you will find a sign that indicates that the Port Wine Trail follows the “Caminho do Pastor” and enters the most beautiful part of the route with landscapes over the entire valley, slopes full of vineyards, the occasional boat going up or down the river, and the city of Peso da Régua in the background and time to enjoy.

The descent starts to run quickly and in no time you are crossing the EN 222 (the trail is a hundred meters of tarmac) towards the luxurious Six Senses Douro Valley.

The visitor almost at the level of the Douro River, the Port Wine Trail then crosses the well-kept vineyards around the old Quinta do Vale de Abraão, today transformed into a Luxury Hotel surrounded by vineyards loaded with grapes and with the river just a stone's throw away.

When the visitor arrives at the Douro River, the walk follows the left bank of the river for some time almost until the village of Curvaceira and it is there that the most difficult part of the trek begins: the climb to Samodães, which is the starting point of the pedestrian route.

On the way up to Samodães you pass vineyards and some ruined houses and reach the parish church where you can visit some farms with wine cellars, inns and ecological excursions.

A magnificent route with superb views over the Douro valley, its vineyards and Marão, but only recommended in spring and autumn.

In winter, the leafless vines take away part of the charm and in summer the heat is excessive for such a significant difference in level.
