Trilho de São Lourenço

The Tua Line was for many years one of the best trails and pedestrian routes in Portugal, but the construction of the Tua Dam led to the submersion of several kilometers of the line, which forced its closure.

The Tua Valley was not left without trails, but the region knew how to reinvent itself and make the best use of the enormous landscape changes created by the Tua Dam reservoir and several hiking trails were marked to enjoy the wonders of the region's nature up close.

The points of interest are the São Lourenço Trail, which is approximately 12.5 km long and has the fantastic viewpoints of Calçada de São Lourenço and Barrabás, from which you have fantastic views over the Tua River.

On the way, you will walk along a Roman sidewalk and have the opportunity to visit the Termas de São Lourenço and the old stations of the Tua Line of São Lourenço and Santa Luzia.

At the end of the walk, take the car and go to the Miradouro de S. Lourenço to enjoy a magnificent view over the Tua Valley framed by the silhouette of São Lourenço made by the hand of sculptor Paulo Moura.

The Small Route “Trilho de São Lourenço” begins and ends at the information panel located in the village of Pombal close to the Church of S. Lourenço which heads towards the Miradouro da Calçada de S. Lourenço and runs along the entire Calçada until the village of São Lourenço.

The village known for its medicinal hot springs, a bypass to the old São Lourenço station, is currently a pier used by boats connecting the Foz Tua dam and the village of Brunheda.

At the exit from São Lourenço, the trail heads towards Miradouro de Barrabás and along this section there is the possibility of following a bypass until very close to the Tua river where the Santa Luzia station once existed.

The Little Route runs through the São Lourenço micro-reserve where forests and rocky outcrops are home to a huge variety of plant and animal species.
