History of the Caldas de Moledo Hot Springs dates back to the birthplace of the Nation
In this place, Dona Teresa de Leão, mother of the 1st king of Portugal, established the boat of God that provided free crossings of the river for both those who sought it for bathing and for pilgrims who made the Camino de Santiago.
D. Teresa founded an inn in this place so that the most disadvantaged had a place to stay and could have access to bathing in this salutary water.
The therapeutic properties of the waters gained maturity in the 18th century and its great development was led by Dona Antonia Ferreira.
At that time, the fame of this seaside resort crossed the border and the refinement and excellence of its services compared with the best places in Paris.
In the Park there began to be luxurious hotels, restaurants, a bandstand, a pharmacy, a railway station and even a telegraph.
In 1863, Francisco José Silva Torres, D. Antónia Adelaide Ferreira's 2nd husband, bought the farm and the couple developed the Termas do Modelo where they built the Palacete, the Estância Balnear, expanded the Hospedaria do Lidoro transforming it into the Grande Hotel, provided land for the Park and ordered an analytical study of the waters.
The demand for thermal waters contributed to the urban and economic development of the area, leading to the construction of various infrastructures such as a Casino, several hotels (Grande Hotel, Hotel Vilhena and Petit Hotel), bathers' houses, three private chapels, several shops, a telegraph-postal station, railway in order to provide a better stay for bathers.
The Caldas de Moledo Thermal Baths were closed ten years ago but with the revitalization of one of the buildings that has a hot water pool.
As part of the project, the building will be rehabilitated and adapted to host a thermal program, with various types of treatment and keeping the swimming pool as the main element.
Caldas de Moledo is located next to the Douro River, extends across the municipalities of Mesão Frio and Peso da Régua and tells a story linked to Dona Antónia Adelaide Ferreira and “Ferreirinha” da Régua, to whom the license for the thermal baths was granted in 1895.
Currently, the restoration of the Caldas de Moledo Thermal Park, which was once the ex-libris of Régua, is awaited.
