Located on the Estoril coast, 5 km from the city of Cascais, it is located in the municipality of Cascais, in the parishes of Cascais and Alcabideche, in the district of Lisbon, Central Portugal
Guincho is situated close to several small villages including Areia, Charneca, Figueira do Guincho and Biscaia.
The beach has around 800 meters of coastline and is popular for surfing, windsurfing and kitesurfing.
Strong northerly winds are prevalent during the summer (June to August), as well as smaller northwesterly waves, making this beach ideal for windsurfing and kitesurfing.
In winter (mainly December) the prevailing winds are from the east, and the swells increase in size making it a perfect place for surfing, with several beach breaks providing powerful lefts and rights.
In the area there are several surfcamps and surf schools that offer accommodation and services, including rentals, repairs and surf lessons.
Guincho is located at the western end of the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, the beach is protected from excessive tourist development, it has a landscape of great beauty in which the white sand dunes contrast with the foothills of the Serra de Sintra that can be seen in the background.
The beach, as it is exposed to strong winds and has strong swells, is very popular with bodyboarders and surfers. In the summer, due to the north that is felt here, Guincho is excellent for windsurfing, with national and international competitions taking place here.
The beach was featured in the pre-title sequence of the James Bond film about On Her Majesty's Secret Service in which James Bond rescues Countess Teresa di Vicenzo from a suicide attempt and thwarts two attackers in the waves, the beach still looks like it did in 1969, the beach served as the setting for the filming of the film This Side of Resurrection directed by Joaquim Sapinho.
In the 90s, Guincho was one of the venues for the world windsurfing championship, but today several sporting events are regularly held, including the National Surfing and Bodyboard Championship.
Currently, Fortaleza do Guincho houses a hotel with a restaurant that has a beautiful terrace overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. There are excellent restaurants specializing in fish and seafood nearby.
