Cova do Vapor Beach is located at the mouth of the Tagus River, Aldeia da Cova do Vapor, parish of Trafaria, municipality of Almada, district of Setúbal, Central Portugal

In this place there is the junction between the Tagus River and the Atlantic Ocean and to the south is the Atlantic Ocean and to the north is the Tagus River. Cova do Vapor Beach is located on the seafront of the fishing village Cova do Vapor and belongs to the mouth of the Tagus River 1 in the south.

The first beach of Caparica with its fishing village attracts more alternative fauna and we can see Lisbon and the Bugio lighthouse in the background.

Cova do Vapor Beach is the first on Costa da Caparica and next to São João beach it is always a good option when the other beaches in the surrounding area are more crowded.

Cova do Vapor Beach is very popular with fishermen and those who prefer a calmer sea and a good place for windsurfing.

The beach has a wide and extensive sandy area divided into two areas divided by a long pier of almost 450 meters in length that integrates the riverbank. The southern area is known as Praia do Albatroz and has a dune system and here the beach is delimited by a smaller pier.

About 3.3 km from the coast you can see the Torre de São Lourenço or Torre do Bugio 1 as the guardian of the entrance to the Tagus River.

The village of Cova do Vapor was once a land only for fishermen, but nowadays, it is a bathing, fishing and suburban village.

In fifty years, the village was pushed more than half a dozen times by the sea into the Mata de S. João and its inhabitants walked with the house on their backs of teams of oxen. At the end of the 1940s, there were significant retreats in the coastline between Cova do Vapor and Costa da Caparica and only between 1947-1951 did 500m disappear.

Cova do Vapor has little houses with just two dirt roads where cars can pass, but the labyrinth of paths winds everywhere with space for some cabbages, fruit trees, clotheslines and inventive garages and outbuildings.

The beach has strong winds that allow kite surfing to be practiced and during low tide there is a sandbank where shellfish (also known as "cadinhas") can be caught.

There are some restaurants in the surrounding area and the quickest way to get there is by car ferry or bicycle from Belém to Trafaria and from there it takes five minutes. The beach has a restaurant/bar, free park, supervised beach with lifeguard during the bathing season, Blue Flag, first aid, excellent water quality and an accessible beach.
