It is located in the city of Pombal, District of Leiria, in the province of Beira Litoral, integrating the Intermunicipal Community of the Region of Leiria, in the region of Central Portugal

Praça Marquês de Pombal, located in the historic area of the city, formerly known as Praça do Comércio, owes its name to the great statesman Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, who between 1777 and 1782 lived here the last years of his life.

For centuries, the Square was the social, economic and administrative center of the old town of Pombal and the place where the Count of Castelo Melhor also chose to take up residence.

The Square is dominated by the Main Church of S. Martinho linked to the peace that the Holy Queen was responsible for and gained a new appearance with the construction of the Granary and the Prison on the site of the old pillory by order of the Marquis of Pombal.

In the square in front of the Church, there were two houses in 1704 where D. Pedro II of Portugal and Carlos III of Spain (cf. Carlos VI, Roman-Germanic Emperor) spent the night.

One of these houses was rebuilt in 1846, retaining a tombstone commemorating the event.

On one side of the square is the Paço dos Condes de Castelo Melhor, which has a tower, on the other the old barn of the rival Marquês and in the middle stands the Igreja Matriz de São Martinho.

Praça Marquês de Pombal, in the city of Pombal, is characterized by a labyrinth of alleys and small medieval squares that surround it and mark what was the city's ancient agora, around which an old village nestled in the protection of a Templar castle was transformed into a town and, in the last quarter of the 20th century, into a city.

In Praça Marquês de Pombal there are historical buildings around it, a dairy, a church flanked by a stone sidewalk with garden benches and some trees, cafes with terraces, a bank, accessory stores, clothing stores, artisanal shops, the Marquês de Pombal Museum and the visitor looking up can see Pombal Castle.
