The central square of Setúbal, named after the best-known poet from Setúbal, is a place to walk, previously called Praça do Sapal, surrounded by several historic buildings such as the City Hall and the Church of São Julião and in the center stands the statue of the poet Bocage.

King D. João II ordered the remodeling of the medieval yard that existed there known as Praça do Sapal, creating the square that would host the statue of Bocage in 1871, erected with public money raised in Brazil and Setúbal on the initiative of the romantic writer António Feliciano de Castilho.

Praça do Bocage is the heart of Setúbal, decorated with palm trees and water mirrors. In the center stands the monument to Bocage, inaugurated on December 21, 1871, on a Corinthian column resting on four octagonal steps and the poet's statue made of white marble.

The poet Bocage with his head uncovered and slightly bowed, dressed in his period, holds a bird feather in his right hand and holds some sheets of paper in his left. The statue, which is two meters high, was carved in Lisbon, in the workshop of Germano José de Salles like the column.

On the monument's pedestal there is the following inscription: «To M. M. Barbosa du Bocage/His Admirers/Portugueses e Brasileiros/MDCCCLXI.» Under this inscription, and on the other sides of the pedestal, there are several quatrains alluding to Bocage, in historical verses.
