Praça da República was an integral part of the Abacial complex until the Friars left this Convent, formerly Praça do Peixe, Praça das Amoreiras and Praça Príncipe Dom Carlos.

The name Praça da República dates back to October 8, 1910 and was used as a fruit and vegetable market, fish market and car park until it became a pedestrian space in 1992.

The current configuration dates back to 1992 and is surrounded by historic buildings, including the two Arches known as Cistercian and Claraval, integrated with 18th century buildings connecting this square to Praça Afonso Henriques, formerly the old barn and the other facilities of the monastery.

Praça da República has at its center a sculpture-fountain with a water tank in honor of the monks, the floor decorated by a black stone star surrounded by grass beds, garden benches, various terraces and stone sidewalks.

Praça da República has historic buildings decorated with tiles, some with balconies and others with terraces at the top and all with many windows that characterize Portuguese architecture.

A commercial area with a shoe store, clothing store, some restaurants, cafes and bakeries.

A space where visitors can rest and enjoy the tranquility of the place and observe the landscape that surrounds them.
