History of the Régua Road Bridge
Bridge located over the Douro river, and integrated into the route of the E.N.2, connecting Peso da Régua to Valdigem, in the municipality of Lamego. Built in 1934 as part of the Lamego Line and was adapted for road use after that project was not completed.
The bridge was built by the National Railway Company, with the project being drawn up by engineer Avelar Ruas and the work carried out by engineer Maçãs Fernandes.
The Régua Road Bridge was built in masonry, standing out from other bridges built at this time, normally built in iron, which allowed for more economical construction.
In 1931, two pillars began to be built over the third arch of the bridge, measuring 65 meters in length, and the last and largest arch of the bridge was completed.
In 1932, the quarter cones that were already being built had yet to be assembled and the installation of the reinforced concrete grid panels to be interspersed with the stonework ones had to be completed.
In 1933, the quarter cones and the abutments on both banks were completed with the breaking of the trench on the left bank of the holding wall of the embankment on the right bank and the road was diverted over the first 6 m arch on the left bank of the river.
