A new leisure space opened on March 21, 2019 that promotes the meeting of generations and where the sun, earth, water and nature coexist in complete harmony.
The Park intended to return the river to the city of Alcobaça, respecting the environmental heritage and the Cistercian legacy, reinforcing the quality of life of the local community and visitors.
The area of more than six hectares constitutes a new centrality with a large social space suitable for spontaneous sports, outdoor activities and capable of hosting various events.
The stay of the Cistercians in Alcobacense territory lasted eight centuries, being interrupted by the secularization of their abbey in 1834.
The action of the monks shaped the cultural landscape and left deep marks on the region's material and immaterial heritage.
The Park symbolizes and celebrates the long presence of this Order in the green and silent valley of Alcobaça.
The municipal park also integrates a broad sustainable mobility strategy that includes the progressive pedestrianization of the Alcoa River from its source to its mouth.
The drinking water pipeline and the monastery's water supply network for the purposes of food, body hygiene and liturgical acts originating in the place of Chiqueda has a linear length of 3, 280 km and an average slope of 1.6‰ and is developed by the force of gravity in underground, surface and elevated sections, which reveals remarkable knowledge of hydraulic engineering on the part of its builders.
In the Park area, the crossing of the clear water pipeline to the monastery is partially based on the right slope of the levada, the aqueduct is located on the surface or at elevation.
