Corvo Natural Park was created on November 5th and has 2 categories of protected areas: Protected Area for the Management of Habitats or Species of the Coast and Caldeirão do Corvo and Protected Area for the Management of Resources of Costa do Corvo

The island of Corvo is the smallest of the islands of the Azores Archipelago, located in the Western Group on the North American Plate north of the island of Flores.

The formation known as Caldeirão, on Corvo Island, the smallest in the Azores archipelago, draws attention for its beauty and unique setting resulting from the sedimentation of a volcanic crater.

The lagoon that was formed in this natural depression is 300 meters deep and occupies a perimeter of 3.7 km, with several small lagoons and almost a dozen river “islets”.

The highest point on the Caldeirão slope is known as Morro dos Homens, and is approximately 720 meters high in relation to sea level, visitors can get a general panorama of the most famous natural depression on Corvo Island.

The extinct volcano, called Monte Gordo, houses this natural attraction of the island and provides moments of contemplation for adventurers who want to discover and explore the region.

The highest point on the island is Estreitinho on the southern edge of Caldeirão, 720 meters above average sea level.

In addition to this elevation, the following stand out: Morro dos Homens, Lomba Redonda, Coroa do Pico, Morro da Fonte, Espigãozinho and Serrão Alto.

The coastline is high and steep, forming the central cone of the volcano, with the exception of the southern part where Vila do Corvo, the only village on the island, was established in a lava fajã.

The lands immediately surrounding the only settlement on the island and a small sheltered area on the east coast (Quintas and Fojo) are the only ones where it is possible to practice agriculture and keep some fruit trees, and the best pastures for livestock are further north in the so-called Highlands.

In the southern cove called Enseada de Nossa Senhora do Rosário there are three disembarkation piers: Porto Novo (not used), Porto do Boqueirão and Porto da Casa (the largest and the only one used in commercial traffic).

Portinho da Areia at the western end of the airport runway is the only beach on the island and its main bathing area.

On the island of Corvo, the “Caimbro” viewpoint stands out, located on the northeast coast of the island of Flores, where visitors can observe the entire island, a traditional windmill on the island of Corvo classified as a property of municipal interest, Porto da Casa is the commercial pier on the island of Corvo.

Lagoa do Caldeirão is located in the so-called Caldeirão do Corvo, in the municipality of Vila do Corvo, on the island of Corvo, in the Azores.

A lagoon formed inside the crater of the volcano that gave rise to the island, which has a perimeter of 3400 meters.

The lagoon is 300 meters deep from the edge of the crater to the water table, there are several small islands that can divide it into smaller lagoons depending on rainfall.

Lagoa do Caldeirão is classified by the Special Protection Zone for the Coast and Caldeirão of Ilha do Corvo, preserving the entire surrounding area, which is extremely rich in biodiversity.

There you can see several lagoons, peat bogs and small "islets" with two long and five round ones.

Caldeirão is part of the Ilha do Corvo Natural Park, an important natural reserve that advocates the preservation of the entire region.

The island of Corvo, discovered more than 500 years ago, was the scene of major battles over the centuries, as well as the presence of pirates and corsairs who used the island as a resting point and to replenish their supplies.

The first permanent inhabitants settled on the island around 1580 and dedicated themselves to agriculture, fishing and raising livestock.

These activities continue today and are the basis of support for its inhabitants, although more recently tourism has also gained importance in the region's economy.

In the Caldeirão region it is possible to contemplate both natural and geological beauty, admire centuries-old monuments that help tell the story and evoke the legends known by local residents determined to defend their small piece of land from the most diverse invaders.
