It is located on Rua de Mouzinho de Albuquerque, city of Valença, in the district of Viana do Castelo, North region and sub-region of Alto Minho

The old prison and the "Domus Municipalis", one of the most emblematic buildings and former stronghold, now hosts memories of the most memorable moments in Valencia's history.

The archaeological remains, the reading of the medieval fortification and the heyday of the 18th century military fortress are the main features of this nucleus.

The Municipal Museum Center shows some of the most significant periods in the history of Valença, whose building is a storyteller but has undergone changes and served different purposes.

Visitors on this route will have the opportunity to visit the local prehistoric room, learn about the medieval environment and come into contact with the city's fortifications dating back to the 17th century.

The municipal museum center is a space for preserving the cultural memory of Valença.

Local history and its connection with intra and extramural tourist-cultural circuits are two of its main objectives.

The Valença Museum Center aims to collect, preserve, interpret and exhibit in order to promote understanding of local history and bring people together through the systematic dissemination of the various activities they intend to carry out.

In the Archeology room, special emphasis will be placed on Roman artefacts, namely ceramics.

The Medieval Fortification room reproduces the medieval castle, its life and experiences and the 18th century Fortification room will feature military assets from the time resulting from the protocol now celebrated with the Portuguese Army.

The Army will provide technical and scientific support in the organization of the Museum Center in terms of the military history of Valença, particularly its 18th century era.

The building that houses the Museum Center is known as the Old Prison and is one of the oldest and most symbolic in the historic area.

Initially it appeared as a Royal House, built at the end of the 13th century and later as the headquarters of the municipal administration, as the Domus Municipalis and in the last century, the function of a jail and in recent years the Municipal Exhibition Room has been located on the lower floor.

The building's ground floor features magnificent vaulted ceilings and arches indicative of Gothic architecture from the time of D. Afonso III.
