Óbidos is a walled medieval town, where the various churches and the tangle of narrow streets lined with beautiful white houses induce the visitor to step back in time.

The Museum was inaugurated on June 15, 1970 with the presence of the then President of the Republic, Admiral Américo Tomás, the Cardinal Patriarch of Lisbon, D. Manuel Alves Cerejeira and several Government authorities, and its first director was the then President of the Chamber, Albino de Castro e Sousa (1922-1984).

The Óbidos Municipal Museum is housed in a 17th century ancestral house behind the Church of Santa Maria in the charming walled city of Óbidos, and displays sacred art including sculpture, painting, and a painting signed by the famous painter Josefa d´Óbidos (1630-1684).

The museum's assets include a valuable collection of French and English weapons from the time of the Peninsular War, baroque furniture, architectural fragments and Roman archaeology.

The permanent exhibition at the Óbidos Municipal Museum is a journey through the artistic production and religious devotion of the town's history.

The collection testifies to the action of religious groups and the cultural enrichment marked by commissions from some of the biggest names in Portuguese Art: a collection of paintings from the 16th and 17th centuries, works by André Reinoso and Josefa d’Óbidos.

The museum displays several oil paintings depicting the death of Saint Sebastian, the martyrdoms of Saint Blaise, the life of Eduardo Malta, among many other works.

Josefa d''''Óbidos was a Portuguese woman born in Seville in 1630, came to Portugal at the age of 4 (and to Óbidos at the age of 6) and died at the age of around 54 in Óbidos, enhancing the name of this town and region.

Josefa d'''' Óbidos has works in addition to painting, copper and silver engraving, highlighting the following: Saint Catherine, Adoration of the Shepherds, Holy Family, Saint John the Baptist, Calvary, Mary Magdalene (exhibited in the Louvre Museum - Paris), Agnus Dei, etc.

The Óbidos Municipal Museum has works by Josefa d''''Óbidos, other important artists such as André Reinoso, Garcia Fernandes and Diogo Teixeira.

The Museum presents a collection of oil paintings from the 16th-17th centuries mainly by Josefa de Óbidos and André Reinoso, the most famous painting is the portrait of Faustino das Neves by Josefa de Óbidos in 1670, notable for its chiaroscuro.

The Municipal Museum is part of the Western Museums route and is the headquarters of the Óbidos Museums and Galleries Network.
