The Museu da Terra de Miranda is an ethnographic museum located in the city of Miranda do Douro, and is located in the city's former “Domus Municipalis”, in an 18th century building dating from the 19th century. XVII.

The Museum was founded in 1982 by Father António Mourinho and is located in the historic center of the city of Miranda do Douro, in Praça D. João III, in the former Domus Municipalis, a monumental building from the 17th century that served as City Hall and Prison until the 1970s.

Since 1982, the building has housed ethnographic and archaeological collections whose exhibition narrative aims to represent the social, cultural, religious and economic life of the communities of Terra de Miranda.

In the two-story property, the southeast-facing body stands out with a full-length balcony, supported by the large arcades with round arches on the ground floor.

As the visitor approaches, the open door of the right arch seems to invite entry, and the cannon pointing east exposed in the left arch symbolically reminds us of the strong military square that was Miranda do Douro, from the 16th century until 1762, the date on which the Castilian army destroyed the fortress of this city.

The collections at the Museu da Terra de Miranda are the result of a systematic collection carried out by a team led by António Maria Mourinho, its founder, and come from the municipalities of Miranda do Douro, Vimioso and Mogadouro. They are divided into different categories: Archaeology, Weapons, Arts and Crafts, Hunting, Ceramics, Domestic Equipment, Musical Instruments, Numismatics, Objects for Ritual Use, Herding, Basketry, Costume, Transport and Clothing.

Within the scope of ethnography, the Museum proposes to materialize an approach to the culture of Terra de Miranda, taking the visitor back to ancestry and at the same time to the daily life of Mirandese.

The scope of agricultural work ranges from pastoralism, various traditional crafts and domestic activities to times of celebration and intense sociability revealed above all by the winter rituals that are so particular to the Northeast of Trás-os-Montes.

In the expository narrative of the Museu da Terra de Miranda, objects of an archaeological and historical nature remind the visitor of the specificity of the Mirandese language, and the role played by the city in maintaining border stability between Portugal and Spain.

Inside, a varied museum collection is on display that tells us what the rustic life and culture of the people of Terra de Miranda was and still is today, from prehistoric times to the present day.

The region has unique characteristics and its own culture, well expressed in the language (Mirandês), dances, music, theater and popular religiosity, gastronomy, forms of economy and the way of being of these people who live from the countryside and livestock.

The museum permanently proposes an ethnography of the Land of Miranda, collections of Mirandese costumes and instruments used in their production such as agricultural implements and masks.

The museum brings together unique characteristics in the country and in the Iberian Peninsula, as it reflects the values of Mirandese culture, whose practices, traditions and linguistic values have been valued and studied at European level.

The Terra de Miranda Museum is responsible for collecting, studying, conserving and exhibiting species of artistic, historical, ethnographic and archaeological value from the entire Terra de Miranda region.
