Montemor-o-Novo is the second largest city in the district, only surpassed by the capital, Évora. The municipality of Montemor-o-Novo is divided into 7 parishes: Cabrela, Ciborro, Cortiçadas de Lavre and Lavre, Foros de Vale de Figueira, Nossa Senhora da Vila, Nossa Senhora do Bispo and Silveiras (Montemor-o-Novo), Santiago do Escoural and São Cristóvão.
Montemor is a municipality with ancient bullfighting traditions since the 15th century when bullfights took place in a wooden enclosure in Praça do Corro (today Praça Miguel Bombarda).
On August 6, 1882, through the work of António Pedro Sameiro, a new Bullring was inaugurated, the current Rossio Bullring, and in 1910 it benefited from restoration works.
The town of Montemor even had two bullrings: the Praça dos Chãos owned by the Viscount of Amoreira da Torre and the current Praça do Rossio and until 1954 it also served as a space for film projections.
The square has capacity for 2000 seats in a classic style, circular plan with benches and covered galleries at the top.
