A rugged natural area with rocks and verdant natural landscapes with undergrowth and flowering plants that cover the entire surface, forming a plant carpet capable of growing across the entire terrain, completely covering the entire space.

The Viewpoint is a large place where you can enjoy beautiful landscapes of the hills and nearby towns of Bombarral: Vale do Roto, Várzea de São Mamede and the place of Columbeira (ruins of the Capela de Santa Ana), an elegant cross that marks the clash between the French armies and the Luso-British alliance.

The Roto Valley and Serra do Picoto were the scene of the final attack by the Luso-British Army in the famous Battle of Roliça fought on August 17, 1808 during the Third Napoleonic Invasion.

In this Battle, the Anglo-Portuguese forces commanded by Lieutenant-General Sir Arthur Wellesley and the French forces commanded by General of Division Henri-François Delaborde faced each other, and it was the first important confrontation between the British expeditionary force and the French.

The Battle of Roliça meant not only for Wellesley but for all British soldiers and politicians, confirmation that despite Napoleon's fame and the reputation of his armies it was possible to beat the French on land (1795-1840).

Next to Cruzeiro stands a geodesic landmark and on a platform at a lower level stands out the Memory on the Battlefield of Roliça

The Characteristics of the Cruise at the Serra do Picoto Viewpoint (Bombarral)

The Cruzeiro rests on a limestone base where a simple Latin cross stands, formed by three elements that create the arms of the cross without any decoration that marks the battle between the French armies and the Luso-British Alliance.

The base of the cross is dated 1753, which corresponds to the year in which the Confraria de Santa Ana e Nossa Senhora da Pobreza was founded.

Visitors can take a walk along the Serra do Picoto, around which the Battle of Roliça took place, using some trails that once connected the villages in this area, passing through the Roto Valley, which houses some of the oldest occupied caves in the region.

Make the most of your visit to the Serra do Picoto Viewpoint and venture out to discover the interesting caves that exist in this territory, such as Nova Gruta.
