The Church of São Tiago is a baroque and neoclassical style temple that was built in 1186 by order of D. Sancho, and later rebuilt after being destroyed in the 1755 earthquake.

The church originally had three naves with the main entrance facing west, and was intended for the use of the royal family during their stay in Óbidos, being enriched over the centuries with numerous works of art, including the Queen's Gallery, a work of Gothic sculpture.

The Church of São Tiago was built in 1186 by order of D. Sancho I and was the temple that served the castle and faced west, in Gothic style with 3 naves.

The Church of São Tiago or Santiago is a construction from the 12th century, from 1186, by order of D. Sancho I. It is located near the entrance to the castle and is one of the best-known temples in the town due to its location at the end of the main street.

The church was completely destroyed by the 1755 earthquake and was rebuilt in 1772, aligning its facade with Rua Direita, supporting the cult of the "Caminos de Santiago" and currently serves as the Municipal Auditorium.

Its reconstruction, in a style quite different from the original Gothic, ended in 1778, its entrance, originally facing the castle, is now facing the center of the town, it was used as support for pilgrims heading to Santiago de Compostela

The main altar had an altarpiece representing Saint James the Great dating from the second half of the 16th century whose author is unknown. The work is currently on display at the Óbidos Municipal Museum.

The church, having been abandoned for a long time, was restored by the institution "Ler Devagar" and transformed into the great Santiago Bookstore, without losing its original meaning.

The altar, the choir and the entire space was adapted with shelves and tables for the exhibition and sale of books. Visitors can also see exhibitions, debates, film screenings, book launches and have a coffee.

José Pinho, from "Ler Devagar", transformed other spaces in Óbidos in the same direction, to turn the town into a "Literary Village" and the church keeps several paintings of great value on the walls.

The Church of São Tiago, a temple begun in the 12th century and one of the most emblematic buildings in the town, is now the Grande Livraria de Santiago.

The church located within the town walls, in Cerca Velha, next to the castle entrance, in this space you can find a wide variety of books, film screenings, debates, book launches and exhibitions.
