Located under the Ria de Aveiro, in Gafanha da Nazaré, Canal do Côjo, city of Aveiro, central Portugal
The building was a tidal mill, and was built in the 15th century, a time to which the arches resting on stilts over the waters of the canal, one of its most iconic elements, date back.
In 1830 it became a support building for the porcelain factory of José Ferreira Pinto Basto, who was also the founder of the renowned Vista Alegre.
In 1903, Francisco Augusto da Silva Rocha renovated the building into the layout that still remains today, with neoclassical and Art Nouveau references to house the School of Industrial Design at the time.
In the 20th century it became known as the Port of Aveiro Captaincy Building, and was also the residence of the port captain until 1992, with the construction of the new Port of Aveiro in Gafanha da Nazaré, all navigation services moved to this new location.
Currently, the building, also known as Casa dos Arcos, is now the headquarters of the Municipal Assembly of Aveiro with a gallery dedicated to temporary exhibitions.
The building of the former Captaincy of Aveiro is considered one of the most significant examples of new art in the Aveiro region and the country.
The works that recently took place in this space transformed the building into a great symbolism in the city's Visiting Room (Câmara Municipal de Aveiro, 2003), and the Aveiro Municipal Assembly is located here.
The restoration of the property was a project under the responsibility of Architect Silva Dias, having been inaugurated on April 25, 2004, in addition to the Assembly also the installation of temporary exhibition rooms.
In the new rehabilitation project signed by Dias da Silva, the Poente façade of the Captaincy was restored, maintaining its chromaticism as well as the decorative elements and the volumetric relationship with the roof.
The North facade (on Avenida Dr. Lourenço Peixinho) was rebuilt, and the South facade benefited from a new design with decorative elements related to the West facade (Câmara Municipal de Aveiro).
