The City of Coimbra is a historically university city because of the University of Coimbra, one of the oldest in Europe and the largest in Portugal, founded in 1290 as a Portuguese General Study by D. Dinis in Lisbon who, after several installations in both cities, settled definitively in the city of Mondego in 1537.

In recent history, the University's student population played an important role by actively defending the values ​​of freedom and democracy in the face of the Estado Novo dictatorship.

One of the oldest cities in the country, it was the capital of Portugal before Lisbon until 1255, and it houses the first National Pantheon, the Santa Cruz Monastery.
