It is located in Largo General Humberto Delgado, city of Guarda, in the region of Central Portugal, sub-region of Beiras and Serra da Estrela
Largo General Humberto Delgado, in the city of Guarda, has a large space with typical Portuguese pavement, centuries-old trees and in the center there is a Monument to the Combatants of the Great War and around it you can see restored historical buildings with typical houses with ground floor and first floor, all with iron balconies.
Humberto Delgado was born in 1906 and was a young officer when the coup d'état took place on May 28, 1926, in which he participated and soon became an enthusiastic supporter of the Estado Novo, having published a book in 1933, “Da Pulhice do Homo sapiens”, in which he praised the “great man Salazar”.
Humberto Delgado was the first leader of the Portuguese Legion, deputy commissioner of Mocidade Portuguesa, representative in the secret negotiations for the transfer of bases in the Azores to the United Kingdom, at the origin of the creation of TAP (at that time director general of Civil Aviation) and received the Grand Cross of the Military Order of Avis in November 1957.
Delgado travels around the country reaching corners where it was not usual to see a candidate for president but where his fame had already reached and which always guarantees him crowds of people accompanied by clashes with the police.
Apparently, the conditions for the outbreak of a military coup were met during the period leading up to and during which the electoral campaign took place.
Until his death, Delgado never stopped believing that military action with the support of armed civilians was the only solution to bring down Salazar's authoritarian regime and in April 1974 History would prove him right.
In the square we also find the Jardim José de Lemos in the city of Guarda with centuries-old trees, lots of vegetation, flowerbeds with grass and colorful flowers, brassica cabbages, benches, lamps and where a monument in honor of the combatants of the Great War stands out.
In Jardim José de Lemos we also find a large stone monument measuring around five meters high and bearing the following inscription: "To the sacrifice and glory of the dead of the Great War 1914-1918".
The Monument to the Dead of the Great War of Guarda was designed by Júlio Vaz Júnior and was inaugurated on July 31, 1940 by General Tasso de Miranda with the blessing of Bishop D. José Alves Matoso and is located in Largo do Jardim General Humberto Delgado.
Currently we can see in Largo real estate agencies, furniture and decorative objects stores, a law firm, a pharmacy, an ice cream shop, a dental clinic, a clinical analysis laboratory, travel agencies, a construction store, a hotel, a paint store, a driving school, the Guarda District Archive and the League of Combatants of the Great War.
Further up, visitors can see the City Hall, the Judicial Court, a disused tourist hotel and cafes with large terraces.
