Santo Antão da Barca and the Chapel of Santo Antão are located in the site of Rebentão, parish of Parada, Municipality of Alfândega da Fé, belonging to the district of Bragança, Northern Region and sub-region of Terras de Trás-os-Montes, Northwest of Portugal.

Works were carried out in 2016, and the paving of the road that connects to the Sanctuary of Santo Antão da Barca brings significant improvements, particularly in the safety and comfort conditions provided to everyone who travels to the site.

The work thus responds to the expectations of the locals, but also of all those who visit this Sanctuary throughout the year.

Visitors and pilgrims visit the place moved by faith. On September 3rd of each year, the festival takes place in honor of Santo Antão da Barca, and you can also observe a spectacular landscape.

The Sanctuary located in the parish of Parada, Alfândega da Fé, was relocated due to the construction of the Baixo Sabor dam.

The place where the old Sanctuary was located was submerged by the waters of the reservoir, and the Chapel of Santo Antão, a building dating from the 18th century, was moved to the new location in a process of heritage preservation that took on unique characteristics in the country.

The Temple is built on top of a hill in a place known as the Rebentão site, about a kilometer away from the previous one, and the future sanctuary replicates the same relationship with the water and the same spatial orientation although at a higher elevation.

The new Sanctuary is made up of the old chapel, and buildings built from scratch such as the guesthouse, a bar restaurant and a museum and administrative space.

An anchorage and a river beach will also be built at the site, which will contribute to boosting this place's tourism.

On the other hand, the construction of direct access to the Sanctuary has already been approved by the Portuguese Roads Institute.

The completion of this connection will allow better, faster and even safer access, benefiting from the proximity of a structural road such as the IC5.

The renovated worship space now has several infrastructures built from scratch, such as a guesthouse, a restaurant bar and a museum and administrative space.

In the chapel of Santo Antão da Barca, mural paintings were detected that will form part of a cultural tourist route entitled “Pinturas da Fé” that the Municipal Council of Alfândega da Fé wants to develop throughout the municipality.

Devotees of Santo Antão da Barca, in Alfândega da Fé, in the Northeast of Trás-os-Montes, go to a new sanctuary displaced by the Baixo Sabor dam in a unique process in Portugal.

The new sanctuary has religious spaces, a restaurant, local accommodation, a small museum, and memories of the place of worship and the river that surrounds it.

The new space will be an opportunity for religious tourism and to visit this area of Northeast Trás-os-Montes.
