History of the building where the Municipal Library is located
The creation of the Municipal Library favored the recovery of one of the most beautiful buildings in the city: the old Palacete dos Barretos.
During the 19th century, Régua became the most important commercial and wine business center in the entire Douro region.
The Costa Pinto Palace was the family residence of an important Reguense family, Dr. Manuel Costa Pinto, who in his municipality was a charismatic leader of the Progressive Party, a distinguished lawyer who, even during the Monarchy, stood out as President of the Municipal Council of Régua.
His daughter's marriage to a young doctor from another large Reguense family, the Barretos, who were also politically linked to the progressives who had a prosperous business, the building continued to be a family residence and became known to this day as the Palacete dos Barretos.
