The Atelier-Museu António Duarte is a municipal museum and is located in the Arts Center, a project developed by the municipality and built by architect Carlos Barbosa.

The Atelier-Museu António Duarte (1912-1998) was opened in 1985 after donating the Master sculptor's art collection to his hometown, Caldas da Rainha.

António Duarte Silva Santos (Caldas da Rainha, 31 January 1912 — Lisbon, 2 March 1998) was a sculptor belonging to the second generation of Portuguese modernist artists.

In his vast work in the field of statuary spread across mainland Portugal, the following stand out: Groups of Sea Horses (Praça do Império, Belém, Lisbon, 1940); Virgin of the Shepherds (Serra da Estrela); and also the monuments to Camilo Castelo Branco (Lisbon, 1949), Diogo Cão (Luanda, 1948), D. Sancho I (1955), D. Pedro I (Cascais, 1965), S. António (Praça de Alvalade, Lisbon, 1972), etc.

After donating the Master sculptor's art collection to his hometown, in 1985 the Atelier-Museu António Duarte was opened in Caldas da Rainha.

António Duarte was awarded the Military Order of Sant''Iago da Espada - Officer grade on March 4, 1941 and Commander grade on October 16, 1987.

His collection includes more than a thousand works, including paintings, sculptures, drawings and a large number of books on plastic arts and literature distributed throughout the various rooms. A large part of his sculptural production is on display, from public sculpture (sketches, models and models) which constitute the best-known part of his work, to an intimate and personal register, an interesting nucleus of Sacred Art for which the artist was aficionado.

The artist António Duarte intended to create a museum with museological activity, but also a space for other artists to develop artistic projects.

The artist António Duarte received the following awards: Mestre Manuel Pereira Prize (1942), Soares dos Reis Prize ((1944, 1953), Domingos Sequeira Prize (1952), Medal of Honor, Brussels International Exhibition (1958), he was also awarded the 1st Prize for sculpture at the I and II Plastic Arts Exhibitions of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (1957, 1961).

The site underwent two renovations with the aim of expanding the existing space: the first by architect Carlos Barbosa and aimed at the construction of the Free Creation Room, on the upper floor, the implementation of Administrative Services and the Cafeteria on the lower floor (1990).

The second interference was in 2001 and was carried out by the Municipal Council of Caldas da Rainha, which created the Public Sculpture Room with temporary exhibitions, the former Administrative Services for the Documentation Center.

The exhibition area is a 61m2 room in a rectangular shape, the lighting comes from natural light that enters through the windows, there is also artificial lighting made with incandescent lamps.
