Alcobaça is a Portuguese city in the district of Leiria, located in the historic province of Estremadura and part of the Intermunicipal Community of the West in the Centro region, with around 7,000 inhabitants in its central nucleus.
However, the urban area covers around 18,000 inhabitants distributed across the parishes of Alcobaça and Vestiaria and part of the parishes of Aljubarrota, Maiorga, Évora de Alcobaça was elevated to city status in 1995, and is famous for the existence of the Royal Abbey of the Alcobaça Monastery, which has become a monument of strong tourist attraction.
The City of Alcobaça is the seat of the municipality of Alcobaça with an area of 408.14 km 2 and 56,693 inhabitants (2011), the second most populous in the Intermunicipal Community of the West and the district of Leiria, subdivided into 13 parishes.
The municipality is limited to the north by the municipality of Marinha Grande, to the east by Leiria, Porto de Mós and Rio Maior, to the southwest by Caldas da Rainha and to the west by Nazaré (which is surrounded by land by Alcobaça), having two sections of Atlantic coast, to the northwest and southwest.
The city is located 92 km north of Lisbon (124 km via A8, or 110 km via IC2/A1), and 88 km southwest of Coimbra (114 km via A8/A17/IC8/A1, or 105 km via IC2/A1).
The theme of wine tourism in the old Quinta do Olival Fechado winery dates back to the 19th century and created by the illustrious Alcobacense José Eduardo Raposo Magalhães.
The largest forest areas in the municipality are: Pine forest in the parish of Pataias (private forests), Serra dos Candeeiros (eucalyptus), Vimeiro (Carvalhal do Gaio), part of the eastern part of the municipality is included in the Natural Park of Serras de Aire and Candeeiros (parishes of São Vicente, Prazeres, Évora and Turquel).
