Azores is one of the two autonomous regions of Portugal and is an archipelago made up of nine volcanic islands in the Macaronesia region, in the North Atlantic Ocean.
 
The Azores is one of the two autonomous regions of Portugal and is an archipelago consisting of nine volcanic islands in the region of Macaronesia in the North Atlantic Ocean, about 1,400 km (870 mi) west of Lisbon, about 1,500 km (930 mi) northwest of Morocco and about 1,930 km (1,200 mi) southeast of Newfoundland, Canada.

The main industries are agriculture, livestock, fishing, tourism which is becoming the main service activity in the region, the main city of the Azores is Ponta Delgada, the culture, dialect, gastronomy and traditions of the Azorean islands vary because these remote islands were colonized sporadically over a period of two centuries.

The Azores are made up of nine main Azorean islands and a cluster of islets in three main groups: Flores, Corvo, to the west Graciosa, Terceira, São Jorge, Pico and Faial in the center, São Miguel, Santa Maria and Recife Formigas to the east.

Monte Pico on Pico Island is the highest point in Portugal at 2,351 m (7,713 ft) and the Azores are among the highest mountains on the planet.

The islands can be divided into three recognizable groups located on the Azores Plateau: (Eastern Group) São Miguel, Santa Maria and Formigas Ilhotas, (Central Group) Terceira, Graciosa, São Jorge, Pico and Faial and (Western Group) Flores and Corvo.
