It is located near the historic center of Sintra, on Rua Barbosa du Bocage, City of Sintra, Central Portugal

The property consists of a romantic palace and chapel and a luxurious park that features lakes, caves, wells, benches, fountains and a wide range of exquisite buildings.

The palace is also known as "Palácio do Milionário Monteiro" which is based on the nickname of its best-known former owner, António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro and the palace was designed by the Italian architect Luigi Manini.

The Palácio da Regaleira has a façade with a structure that is characterized by exuberantly Gothic spiers, gargoyles, capitals and an impressive octagonal tower.

The palace contains five floors, a ground floor, three upper floors and a basement.

The ground floor is made up of a series of corridors that connect the living room, the dining room, the billiard room, the balcony, some smaller bedrooms and several stairs.

The first floor contains bedrooms and a dressing room, on the second upper floor there is Carvalho Monteiro's office and the maids' rooms.

The third upper floor contains the ironing room and a smaller room with access to a terrace, in the basement there are the male servants' rooms, the kitchen had an elevator to lift food to the ground floor and the storage rooms.

The Regaleira Chapel has an architecture similar to that of the palace, the interior of the chapel is richly decorated with frescoes, stained glass windows and luxurious stucco (Roman Catholic Chapel).

The frescoes contain representations of Teresa of Ávila and Saint Anthony as well as other religious representations, the floor itself offers representations of the armillary sphere of the Portuguese discoveries and the Order of Christ the Cross surrounded by pentagrams, despite its relatively small size it has several floors.

The park features four acres of land on the surrounding property and consists of a densely wooded park lined with a myriad of roads and footpaths.

The woods are well laid out in the lower parts of the property, but are left wild and disorganized in the upper parts reflecting Carvalho Monteiro's belief in primitivism.

The park also contains an extensive and enigmatic system of tunnels that have entry points: caves, chapel, Lago da Cachoeira and Gruta da Leda which is underneath the Torre da Regaleira.

The Initiation Wells also called initiation wells or inverted towers are two wells on the property that resemble stair-lined underground towers that were used for ceremonial purposes that included Tarot initiation rites (The "Initiation Well" connects to other tunnels through a series of underground passages)

The largest shaft contains a 27 meter spiral staircase with several small landings, the spacing of these landings combined with the number of steps on the stairs are linked to Tarot mysticism, rituals of Freemasonry, Rosicrucianism or the Knights Templar.

The smaller well also called ''''Unfinished Well'''' contains straight stairs that connect a series of ring-shaped floors to each other.
