It is located at the top of Monte de São Silvestre, Vila de Mesão Frio, district of Vila Real, Northern Region, Douro sub-region
The viewpoint allows you to glimpse a large expanse of landscape, allowing you to observe the vineyards, the Douro River, the valuable architectural heritage from which the majestic buildings of the town of Mesão Frio stand out.
At the São Silvestre Viewpoint, you can see the Douro River, which forms an "L" curve in front of the Network.
Visitors departing from Mesão Frio arrive at the viewpoint which is approximately 4 kilometers away, follow the EM518-1 towards Portela, follow the signs to the right and go up to the viewpoint.
The São Silvestre Viewpoint, at an altitude of 530 meters, has a large landscape area, making it possible to observe the Douro wine-growing landscape and a large section of river and the view of Mesão Frio.
The landscape is dominated by vineyards, olive trees, dense pine trees, fragrant eucalyptus and yellow broom.
Regarding fauna, there are rabbits, mink, wild cats and even foxes in the viewpoint area.
In this ancestral place, visitors can still see the São Silvestre Chapel, the São Silvestre Swing (opened on July 29, 2020) and the sunrise represents a unique experience and in summer it is another opportunity to head north.
The incredible swing is 530 meters above sea level with a panoramic view over the village of Mesão Frio, the vineyards, the Douro River and flanked by the Marão, Meadas and Montemuro mountains.
In the middle of this landscape, small villages with small houses painted white and their roofs mark nature in its purest state where vineyards predominate in the mountains.
Visitors can watch the flight of a prey and discover and hear a rabbit, a wild cat or a fox in the middle of the woods, but they can also see the traditional mills or the castro of Cidadelhe.
The São Silvestre do Cimo do Douro Viewpoint has a stone sidewalk flanked by a stone terrace and has one of the most stunning views over the Douro River at 360 degrees and several farms with fields cultivated with vineyards.
The region is rich in microclimates as a result of its rugged terrain, producing quality wines such as whites, reds and rosés, sparkling wines, liqueurs and wine spirits with their own specificities.
Of the total volume of wine produced in the Douro Demarcated Region, around 50% is destined for the production of "Port Wine" and the remainder is destined for the production of high quality wines that use the controlled designation of origin "Douro" or "Douro Wine".
