The Island of Tavira is sandy and approximately 11 km long located along the Algarve coast, located in the extreme east of the Island of Tavira next to the Tavira bar, south of the city of Tavira and is part of the Ria Formosa Natural Park, Southern Portugal
Access is by boat from the Quatro Águas pier or the Tavira waterfront in the city center (Rua Dr. José Pires Padinha).
In the city center of Tavira you won't always find parking so if you have a car it is best to board at the Quatro Águas pier which is about 2 km from the center where there is ample parking.
The environmental quality of the Island of Tavira is certified annually with Blue Flag and its beaches are very popular with tourists, especially during the bathing season.
The salt marshes and small channels of the Ria Formosa adjacent to the island are great places for observing and studying seabirds.
Access is via boats departing from Tavira or the Quatro Águas pier or on foot via a bridge located near the village of Pedras D`el Rei.
The island is 11 km long and has four beaches: Praia da Ilha de Tavira (Praia de Tavira), Praia da Terra Estreita, Praia do Barril and Praia do Homem Nu.
On the island of Tavira there are no cliffs or rocks and if you walk a little to the right or left you won't find many people around you either.
What there is is a fantastic place to visit with clean sand and a blue sea and an endless stretch of sand in sight on the Island of Tavira due to the warm waters and sometimes the algae reaches tons.
Tavira Island is separated from Cabanas Island to the east by Barra de Tavira, which is artificial and the current version was inaugurated in 1950, and from Ilha da Fuzeta to the west by the natural Fuzeta bar.
The island is what remains of the old Grande Ilha de Tavira by a dune string that extended from Barra da Fuzeta to Cacela, which was separated into two portions (Ilha de Tavira and Ilha da Abóbora) when the first bar in Tavira was opened in 1926.
In the 1941 cyclone, the first bar was completely blocked and unusable due to the opening of a new natural bar: Barra de Cochicho (which migrated east and changed its name depending on the location) leaving the original Island separated into three portions (Ilha de Tavira, Ilha de Cabanas and Peninsula de Cacela).
The natural sea access bar began to be used more and it became necessary to open a new bar to the west of the original, which opened in 1961.
The westernmost portion is what remains of the longest former island, where the coastline has not receded as much as on the remaining islands to the east.
A small forest of stone pine where you can observe the chameleon that diversifies the typical dune landscape of the barrier islands.
On the side of the island facing the estuary, children enjoy the warm, still waters of the lagoon as well as the pier structures that make diving possible.
On Tavira Beach there is the Ilha de Tavira Campsite, 2 restaurants with fresh fish, 1 bar, public toilet, bathing facilities, a small picnic area and is monitored throughout the bathing season and has a Blue Flag.
The attractions are: Rio Gilão, Parking 4 Águas, Cais das Quatro Águas, Tavira Island Ferry Port, Praia da Ilha de Tavira, Cais da Terra Estreita, Praia da Terra Estreita, Trilho do Barril, Praia do Barril tourist train, Praia do Barril (Cemitério das Anchoras), Praia do Homem Nu, Canal de Tavira, Farol de Tavira Molhe Oeste.- Extremo, Ilha das Cabanas (Praia do Forte da Barra, Praia do Golden Club, Praia de Cabanas, Vila Nova de Cacela (Praia do Lacém Mar, Praia da Fábrica, Praia de Cacela Velha, Cacela Peninsula, Praia de Manta Rota Oeste, Praia da Lota, Praia da Manta Rota and Praia da Ribeira de Altura).
