It is located in Praça Municipal, Vila de Arcos de Valdevez, district of Viana do Castelo, North region and subregion of Alto Minho, seat of the municipality of Arcos de Valdevez
The Casa das Artes/Municipal Library of Arcos de Valdevez is originally a 18th century building classified in 1982 as a Property of Public Interest and known as "Casa do Terreiro" or "Casa do Conselheiro", occupying a spatial area bordering the Jardim dos Centenários between the Matriz and Espírito Santo churches.
Its construction took place in the second half of the 18th century on the initiative of the Pereira de Vilhena family, who in 1810 handed over the property to "Counselor" Gaspar de Azevedo Araújo and later the house was sold to industrialist António Dias Gonçalves.
An architectural space integrated into the so-called "long house" with a rectangular plan featuring a three-story rear façade originally with a direct connection to the Vez River.
The first floor had an arcade, the second a loggia with columns under a plinth and closed to create a winter garden.
On the main floor, the magnificent skylight and the five halls decorated with canvas painting and careful stucco work stand out.
The two-story frontispiece is divided into three sections marking the noble entrance and the emblazoned element there replaces an identical element belonging to the founding family of the house.
The intervention carried out in the Casa das Artes Concelhia space was based on the recovery of the 18th century building, providing for the installation of a cultural space integrating a library, an auditorium and an exhibition area.
The building's infrastructure and equipment will allow the development of new modalities linked to cultural and artistic production in the various thematic components: cinema, music, visual arts, theater, among others, supporting cultural creation and production, motivating and promoting local events, otherwise unrealizable.
The space of the house includes the space of the Tomaz de Figueiredo Municipal Library, part of the National Public Reading Network, areas dedicated to training activities for children and young people, an expression studio, a storage area, document conservation, consultation and loan areas and an audiovisual broadcast section.
The architectural plan allowed the enhancement of the set of arches and columns, creating a harmonious and complementary atmosphere with an entirely new element: the Auditorium.
The space has an auditorium with 234 seats, temporary exhibition area, cinema projection that has adaptable equipment with state-of-the-art sound processing, conferences and multimedia presentation.
