Located on Avenida 25 de Abril, city of Viseu, central Portugal

The Convent of Santo António dos Capuchos existed in this location until 1834, but then it became a Park where it maintained imposing oaks, chestnut trees, white poplars, magnolias and stone pines.

Parque Aquilino Ribeiro was part of the medieval "Quinta de Mançorim" where the convent of Santo António dos Capuchos was built in 1635.

The convent was purchased in 1635 from a daughter of Chantre Gaspar d’Abreu, taking possession of the Third Order of Saint Francis.

In the year 1641, Frei Gregório de Jesus ordered the planting of 600 trees of oak and chestnut trees, with his successor Frei Belchior dos Reis enriching the fence with more trees and grafts in the orchard.

After the extinction of religious orders in 1834, the building was requisitioned in 1836 for the Hunters' Barracks nº 2, House of Sessions of the City Council, Roda dos Expostos, House of Public Bookstore, Inn and Workshops.

In 1838, the fence was transferred to the council for a nursery, vegetable garden and cemetery, but in 1955 the barracks was demolished and the park was created, which was the second project by landscape architect António Viana Barreto.

The imposing specimens of oak (Quercus robur L.) that we can still see today were probably planted by the Capuchos friars of S. Francisco on the fence that protected the convent.

The place was converted into an urban park in 1955 and we can find species such as holly and walnut trees and the park was a project by landscaper Facco Vianna Barreto at the beginning of the 21st century.

Now there is a sensory garden with Braille characters allowing blind people to touch, reach and feel the flowers and the place has become more romantic and peaceful.

Inside the park we find the Baroque Church of the Third Order of Saint Francis and the 16th century Chapel of Our Lady of Victories.

Parque Aquilino Ribeiro is one of the lungs of the city of Viseu where for centuries there have been large trees and other plant species that are testimony to the time when that space was a medieval farm and close to a convent.

The park, measuring around 3.5 ha, is located in the center of Viseu with several entrances, the main one being in front of Escola Secundária Alves Martins.

The park is walled and has a circular square that distributes to the various spaces, with a central fountain also with a circular tank, metal bowls with water fountains that surround the square.

The circular stone paths cross a wooded area where there is a children's playground and a skating rink.

The park is crossed by an artificial stream with banks naturalized with stones in a lake with a fountain and crossed by wooden paths, tables and benches for rest areas.

Next to the lake there is a terrace that extends the shore allowing greater contact for visitors with the lake and around it there are camellias, magnolias, large-flowered magnolia and cypress trees.

To the north is a large lawn with a small Mannerist Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Vitória moved in 1956 by the Church of the Third Order of São Francisco whose front faces the Rossio de Viseu with access via a staircase.

The park has notable examples of oaks, strawberry trees, chestnut trees and examples of cypresses, poplars and agapanthus that predominate in the flowerbeds.
