It is located in Serra de Monsanto, in the municipality of Lisbon, Central Portugal
The Park has an area of 1000 hectares subject to the total forestry regime with around 10% of the municipality of Lisbon, integrating the territory of seven parishes: Benfica, São Domingos de Benfica, Campolide, Campo de Ourique, Belém, Ajuda and Alcântara.
The Monsanto Forest Park is the main lung of the Portuguese capital, made up of recreational spaces that provide various activities such as extreme sports, hiking, outdoor activities, running trails, theater plays, concerts, fairs, exhibitions, and also unique views over the city of Lisbon, the Tagus River estuary and the Atlantic Ocean.
The Monsanto Green Corridor allows direct access to the Park for pedestrians and cyclists coming from Baixa de Lisboa and Parque Eduardo VII.
The work connects Parque Eduardo VII to Parque Florestal de Monsanto, crossing Avenida Gulbenkian via a pedestrian bridge opened in September 2009 named after Gonçalo Ribeiro Telles in honor of the architect.
In the Monsanto mountains, the following mills can still be seen today: Moinhos de Santana (Moinho de Santana and Moinho Velho), Moinhos do Bairro do Caramão and the Moinhos do Casalinho da Ajuda.
In Parque Florestal, the quarries are deactivated and have been covered by vegetation and are only visible to visitors who travel through the area on foot or by bicycle.
The Monsanto mountain range was integrated into the western section of the so-called Campo Entrincheirado de Lisboa, made up of forts, strongholds, and built between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century to defend Lisbon from both land and sea attacks.
In Campo Entrincheirado in Lisbon we can still see the Forte do Alto do Duque (in the extreme southwest of the Monsanto Forest Park, in the parish of Ajuda) and the Forte de Monsanto (in the upper part of Monsanto, in the parish of Benfica).
The Monsanto Forest Park includes three recreational parks: Parque do Alto da Serafina or Parque dos Índios, Parque do Alvito and Parque dos Moinhos de Santana (its name is due to the presence of Moinhos de Santana in the highest area of the space).
The Monsanto Ecological Park is the largest green space located in the heart of Lisbon with almost 1000 hectares consisting of Lisboa Camping with two multi-sports spaces, a mini golf course, two tennis courts, a swimming pool area with solarium and terrace, a social room and an amphitheater.
At the Monsanto Space Interpretation Center it is possible to get to know the park through temporary exhibitions, activities developed by the toy library and painting studio, an auditorium, an open-air amphitheater, a car park and a picnic area.
Monsanto's green space also includes the Alto da Serafina Recreational Park, the Calhau Recreational Park, ideal for those who want to walk and play sports, the São Domingos de Benfica Forest, the Alvito Children's Park, the Moinhos de Santana Urban Park and the Quinta da Fonte Nurseries.
In March 2016, the Monsanto Forest Park received Forest Management Certification from the Forest Stewardship Council, the most important global certification in terms of environmental compliance for forest farms, with the Municipality assuming its commitment to maintaining quality and demand levels in Forest Management.
