It is located in the municipality of Macedo de Cavaleiros, in the center of Northeast Trás-os-Montes, Northeast of Portugal
 
The dam was built in the early eighties, and the large water storage capacity allowed the creation of an ecosystem conducive to the existence of numerous species of migratory birds that attract visits from many ornithologists and nature lovers throughout the year.

This important Protected Area was integrated into the Natura 2000 Network, and also has trails for walking and cycling.

At Albufeira do Azibo you can practice water sports such as swimming, rowing and canoeing and enjoy the two river beaches of Fraga da Pegada and Ribeira with a floating pool near the village of Santa Combinha.

In the Central Nucleus, between the villages of Vale da Porca and Salselas, visitors have at their disposal a museum room dedicated to Archeology, with an auditorium, bar and an Ecoteca.

Designed for agricultural irrigation, Albufeira do Azibo gained the status of Protected Landscape due to its environmental qualities, it is also part of the Transfrontier Biosphere Reserve of the Iberian Meseta, classified as such by UNESCO, the largest reserve in Europe.

Albufeira do Azibo, more than just the name of a river, is synonymous with environmental quality, scenic beauty and river beaches.

One of the most visited places in the entire Northeast of Trás-os-Montes because it has a huge lake where species are protected, a network of signposted trails that delight hikers.

The space is made up of two beaches successively awarded the Blue Flag: “Praia da Fraga da Pegada” and “Praia da Ribeira”.

Praia da Fraga da Pegada is the river bathing area with the most Blue Flags in all of Europe, and Praia da Ribeira is one of the 7 Wonders and Beaches of Portugal.

Two kilometers from the city of Macedo de Cavaleiros is the Protected Landscape of Albufeira do Azibo, it was created in 1999 and is a space of regional and national importance with more than 4,000 hectares.

The Protected Landscape of Albufeira do Azibo is a repository of vegetation of national importance and is home to several threatened species, and is an excellent example of sustainable development as it promotes leisure and recreational activities in harmony with environmental protection. Visitors can go hiking or cycling, go to the beach and practice water sports (non-motorized), rest on the terraces, have picnics in the picnic area and visit the museums and surrounding towns, watch birds and participate in organized environmental interpretation activities.

The Protected Landscape of Albufeira do Azibo is located two kilometers from the city of Macedo de Cavaleiros, from the city you can access the north side via the EN 15/A4 and the east side via the EN216, followed by the EN 564 and the EN 564-i towards Vale da Porca.
