The Madeira Botanical Garden is one of the most beautiful gardens in the region with wonderful views over the city of Funchal and is located in Quinta do Bom Sucesso.
The farm dates back to 1881 by the Reid family who created the garden as their private park and today the property is open to the public.
The garden covers an area of 80,000 m2 and houses a fascinating collection of diverse plant species, a research and conservation area and a Natural History Museum and a cable car that connects it to the Parish of Monte.
The Garden is made up of several botanical species, more than 2,500 plants from all continents that coexist in harmony, around 300 exotic birds and 200 species indigenous to the Region.
The current designation “Jardim Botânico Engenheiro Rui Vieira” was made on September 4, 2009 by Resolution of the Regional Government in order to honor its first director Rui Vieira for the work carried out in the organization and structuring of what is today the Botanical Garden as one of the quality images of the Region.
At the Madeira Botanical Garden, research is carried out on the flora of Macaronesia and in particular the study of the plant biodiversity of the Madeira archipelago.
Currently, the Madeira Botanical Garden is owned by the Regional Government, integrated since 1992 into the Regional Directorate of Forests, of the Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Natural Resources.
The Madeira Botanical Garden is a very beautiful place, with a very well-marked route, where we can see various types of flora, but it also has a museum about some of the island's animals.
In the Garden there is a great variety of species, mosaics with flowers, shrubs, a huge variety of plants and flowers with flowerbeds, fountains, and with beautiful views of the City of Funchal and the Atlantic Ocean in the background.
A pleasant walk through nature, a garden with a wide variety of flowers, several types of flowers and trees that are stunning, and listening to the sound of birds.
The lakes, fountains and water channels are very well designed, the beauty of some flowers takes us to fields that are extremely rich in biodiversity, and a wide variety of cacti and palm trees.
